Introduction

All kinds of software applications have been used as SaaS in different times and places, from enterprise resource planning applications to customer relationship management applications, and even web analytics.

Whatever form it takes, SaaS has a warm social climate because it works. 20 years in, business owners see its efficiency and cost savings and want to keep opting into new options. Most today think of SaaS as either cloud-hosted applications or on-premises hardware and software tied applications.

On prem applications are often referred to as Legacy services. Think Cintas or Comcast Business. While they host a cloud-based customer account, data, or billing, there is a tangible piece of the provider that touches your business. SaaS is the more modern version of legacy services.

SaaS provides an enormous number of advantages over legacy services.

It is more cost-effective since users pay only for the services they need, and they can scale up or down quickly as their needs change.

It requires less maintenance since it is hosted in the cloud, which eliminates the need for on-site IT staff.

SaaS solutions are more secure since they are often hosted in secure data centers, and they can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection.

Small and medium size businesses are not taking advantage of this nearly enough.
